Each of us has the “right” to be well, to enjoy our daily activities and look forward to them. However, we are much more than a bunch of organs doing specific jobs and need much more than food or exercise to be well. One of the primary needs we have is to be loved and accepted, by our parents and by our peers. When these “emotional or spiritual” needs are not being met we can be ill even though we’re being given the so called “perfect foods” for the body. Understanding that true wellness encompasses the “whole” person is truly the first step to achieving it.
Deepak Chopra, MD, says, “There exists in every person a place that is free from disease, that never feels pain, that cannot age or die. When you go to this place, limitations which all of us accept cease to exist. They are not even entertained as a possibility.” This is the place called perfect health. Dr. Chopra goes on to say that the cause of disease is often extremely complex, but one thing can be said for certain: no one has proved that getting sick is necessary! Quite the opposite, in fact.
Does this mean that we can chose how healthy we are? The answer is emphatically YES! You can only be as healthy as you think it is possible. Please consider for a moment examples in history where there were great plagues and thousands died of these terrible “problems”, yet many doctors, nurses and volunteers were working with the sick and dying for long periods of time and didn’t get sick. What made them immune to this “contagious disease”? The answer lies inside each of us.
Taking responsibility for our own health and welfare requires personal education and assistance from all of those who may have discovered answers that are not easily found or readily known. One such individual is Bill Scott,MA and a Rayid Master teacher. Bills’ work with the family and the educational system is ongoing and of great value to teachers, parents, and family members. Bill Scott has a special section in this website so take a few minutes to acquaint yourself with his work. It may change your life.
I think one of the problems we have is that of the “sickness model” used by allopathic medicine. We’ve been taught that disease is a result of a pathogen that invades our body (virus, bacteria, parasite, etc.) and makes us sick. This model will someday be understood to have many flaws as we learn more about health and wellness. You see, a healthy body can handle and effectively deal with any of these pathogens. It’s the unhealthy body that has problems with these. Understanding what makes the body unhealthy and thus susceptible to these invaders is important in our journey to understand how to be well.
Recent events have caused most Americans and most others around the world to take a closer look at freedom and what it means. Speaking of freedom, just how free are we to be healthy? It seems that in the US, at least, the government has given itself the power to mandate conventional medical care and hundreds of millions of dollars are given exclusively to traditional medical practitioners (government approved) each year by Medicare and Medicaid. This forces many people to take part in this traditional medical system because of economics, even though it may not be doing them any good at all. The problem is further amplified because most private insurance companies follow the governments lead and further force a large portion of the population to play by their rules. The tragedy of this is that research from Harvard Medical School shows that 180,000 deaths each year are caused by poor medical care. (Read the “Great White Lie” by Walt Bogdanich)
From the number of people who call and visit with me in the office it appears that this system is doing more than causing 180,000 deaths each year. It is also failing to help many more of us get our health back and function as we desire to. So many of you have expressed your frustrations at going from one doctor to another only to be told that your problems were all in your head.
I’ll never forget one lady who sat down in my office and in tears related her story of going to one doctor after another in hopes of getting help with hot flashes that were hitting her every 20 seconds. Then she looked directly into my eyes and said “If you laugh at me too, I’ll hit you”. She was so elated a few weeks later to be able to report that Wild Yam Cream and some support to her thyroid had eliminated her problem almost entirely.
In his new book, “The Wellness Revolution”, economist Paul Pilzer explains how the food industry bombards us with advertising to get us to eat more and more of the worst foods possible, making us sick and sending us to the medical industry for treatment from this poor diet, and how we get caught in a viscious cycle. He also talks about the “millions of Americans who are not overweight and who are healthier than ever before because they have embraced a revolutionary new approach to diet, to exercise, to vitamins, to nutritional supplements, to medical care, and to aging itself.” (pages 162-165)
“Reclaiming Your Health” is a wonderful analogy to helping one understand our current health paradigm and how it fits, taken from the book by the same title written by John Robbins. Please take a couple of minutes to read his thought provoking story of a country in trouble with its health care system and why.
